Before you scoff, with attendances of close to 300,000 people over three days, this is a lot more than a few farmers and their tractors churning up mud. Every year in September, the host county rolls out the welcome mat.
When the party comes to town
The championships move around the country, and in 2022 they were held at Ratheniska in County Laois. Wherever the event lands, it is about much more than ploughing. There is a livestock show and a huge machinery exhibition, and well over a thousand exhibitors compete for attention with their products and services. The mood is one of fun with an undertone of serious business, and plenty of deals are, well, unearthed. Head to the food areas for food and drink to satisfy everyone.
Networking opportunities abound. From agricultural products and services to trade stands, there is a lot to see if you work in farming or the food industry. As a visitor, you can also marvel at the ploughing competitions, displays and demonstrations, or simply soak up the atmosphere. In typical Irish fashion, food, drink, music and good cheer are in no short supply.
Three days of activity, fun and opportunity
The Ploughing may be the last thing you would expect as a holiday highlight. But this is where rural Ireland comes together, and the atmosphere buzzes for three days. Come for the ploughing, stay for the craic. In some years Ireland has also hosted the World Ploughing Contest, which gives the event an even more international feel.
Tips for visiting
- Wear wellies. The site is a working farm, and after rain it can get very muddy.
- Dress for all weather. September in Ireland can bring sunshine and showers on the same day.
- Plan your journey. Traffic around the site is heavy, so check the official travel advice and any shuttle or park-and-ride options.
- Bring cash and a bag. Many stands give out samples and leaflets.
